I love what I do. I am an experienced literature, rhetoric and composition teacher with over 10 years classroom experience. I grew up in Connecticut in a small suburb right in between New York and Boston. After graduating from college, I headed west to San Francisco and remained for almost 12 years. There I learned about sushi, kite surfing, wine tasting and kayaking at the base of mountains. Now, with two young sons, my husband and I decided to move half way between the West Coast and East Coast and settle in Texas, where everyone is friendly and family oriented.
Over my years teaching, I have taught all levels of high school classes, including post-secondary composition and rhetoric courses. I earned a master’s degree in teaching composition and have extensive experience working with students of all skill levels and learning styles, especially struggling students in the after-school writing center and high-achieving students electing to take college coursework early.
My passion has been developing a high school writing center that offers free tutoring for writing assignments in all subjects. While classroom teaching is very rewarding, I have found the challenges of working with students one-on-one and in small groups a very different and exciting challenge. I am very comfortable with and skilled at assessing, re-assessing and accommodating individual students’ needs in a short time frame. I have developed and facilitated workshops for students on topics from citing sources to writing college application essays. Also, I have run faculty workshops on grading essays and writing effective essay prompts.
At the college level, I taught remedial classes to prepare students for post-secondary writing, college-ready students in the first-year composition course, and advanced students in a rhetoric course. I use my knowledge of multiple intelligences and learning styles to work with students and design curriculum that allows them to make as many choices for themselves as possible. My teaching style encourages and rewards students’ independent thinking and taking an active role in the learning process, often in small group or workshop mode so they can learn from each other and grapple with their own discoveries.
I look forward to my first year at Yavneh Academy, teaching the junior English classes, working with the counseling department and seniors applying to college, and developing the school's first Writing Center. Please feel free to contact me regarding any issues or concerns. I have attached my professional resume for further information.
