A Place to Write

In general, finding the best place for your child to do his homework is important. When it comes to writing, it can make or break the entire writing experience. Knowing how your child works best and being able to monitor progress is key. Some students brainstorm and organize ideas better with background noise, while others need complete quiet. Talk to you child and see what he thinks. Then find a place that fits his need as a student and your comfort level as a parent. Remember, what works for you may not work for him. Warning: No matter how convinced he is, working on his essay in his bedroom with the stero blaring, television on and cell phone ringing while he does push ups and eats Cheetos is not a conducive environment for ANY student. However, one of those "strategies" in moderation may actually help (except the cell phone). Here are some more acceptable suggestions to offer.

If he needs background noise or someone to bounce ideas off of as he works, the kitchen table may be a good spot.

If he needs total quiet but can get distracted on his own, set up a table in another bedroom, not his.

Hallways can also be good for the brainstorming and organizing process. There is usually lots of wall space to gently tape up idea sheets and review. There are no other distractions and a long area to spread out notes and physically walk through them.

Don't forget the backyard, weather permiting! For the nature lover, the back yard may provide more quiet and less distraction than inside the house. But make sure he has a work surface such as a folding table or picnic table.
